Punch Excision

There are four major factors that cause acne: overactive pore glands, blockage of skin pores, activity of normal skin bacteria, and inflammation.
The development in the medical and surgical studies found ways to treat this ailment like Punch Excision, Dermal Fillers, Punch Elevation, Subcutaneous Incision, and Laser Resurfacing. These procedures are normally done by dermatologist and cosmetic surgeons. On which treatment procedure to be performed would be highly dependent on the type of acne scar to be removed. There are three types of acne scars, namely ice pick, boxcar and rolling scars. Ice pick acne scars are narrow and deep; it looks as if sliced by an ice pick. On the other hand, boxcar acne scars are round pit with sharp vertical edges. While rolling acne are depressed scars with rippling surface. By evaluating the type of acne scar, the right treatment could easily be identified.

One of the best treatments for an ice pick or boxcar acne scar is through punch excision. This surgical procedure uses punch biopsy tool, which looks similar to a sharp round cookie cutter. The size of the punch biopsy tool will depend on the size of the scar. Its diameter normally ranges from 1.5 mm to 3.5 mm. This tool is used by the dermatologist to “punch-out” the scar and stitches the remaining skin together. During the surgical procedure a local anesthesia will be used, causing your skin to be numb for several hours.

Another way of doing punch excision, the dermatologist will do Dermal Grafter instead, by removing a skin with normal tissue from elsewhere, usually behind the ears or from the thigh, and set it on the mark with scar tissue. However, a skin resurfacing technique will most likely be needed to amend differences with skin color and texture.
