Adolescence is supposed to be that period when young adults have fun but why does this period coincide with a malady called teen acne?
Acne is common among teenagers, more in boys than in girls. This is because teenagers are in the stage of puberty where their body produces more androgen hormones that cause acne. The more production of androgen, the worse the acne gets.
The common belief that acne is primarily caused by eating oily food and chocolates is a fallacy because there are other causes of acne like changing hormones and allergens.
Teenagers have this habit of washing their faces too much for fear that acne results from lack of proper hygiene. While it helps to keep your face clean, it does not stop acne from coming out. Washing one’s face at least twice a day will help keep it free from dirt. Avoid using soaps with high ph or acidity level. It is also advisable to use a toner after washing and to exfoliate and rid your face of dead skin cells.
Also make sure that your hair does not rub your face as it may irritate your face. If you have long hair then make sure to keep it away from your face. Always keep your hair clean by washing it regularly. A dirty and oily hair can worsen acne problems.
A lesson, which teenagers learn later in life, is never to prick those bumps and lumps on their faces because such habit will have telltale signs later on in the form of deep facial scars.
Society is so obsessed with looking good that having acne can be the worst nightmare for a teenager. It may sound exaggerated but facial acne can mean the end in a teenager’s social life. Acne can lead to more serious problems like insecurity, low self-esteem, unhealthy social life and other psychological problems. It can even lead to decreasing interest in going to school and other social functions.
Teenagers who have acne problems should consult their doctors to prevent being scarred for life, both physically and psychologically.
